For phase 1, Dr Arem does not recommend any alcohol, not even wine. The purpose of this phase is to lower the glycemic index and the glycemic load of your meals, particularly in the evening, and to consume the right amount of calories for optimal weight loss. “For phase 2, if your goal is to continue to lose fat, I also would be conservative with any alcoholic consumption, especially before dinner because the sugar content and alcohol effect can enhance your appetite, says Dr. Arem. “In phase 2, one or two drinks can be allowed on occasion with dinner. Some of my patients, after achieving their desired weight, are able to have a drink after work and keep the weight off, but these people are rigorous followers of the diet guidelines.
WHAT ABOUT ALCOHOL?
You simply can’t ignore the calories and sugar in alcoholic drinks. Liquor itself intoxicates your metabolic function as it pollutes your fat-clearing liver, and most mixers are loaded with sugar. Wine has a lot of sugar, too. If you want to drink alcohol, limit yourself strictly. Choose red wine over white, as it has less sugar and you’ll at least benefit from the resveratrol it contains. If you’re addicted to drinking daily, work on your addition first so alcohol doesn’t weaken your willpower.
