Jessica, a 42-year-old corporate executive, came to see me for a second opinion concerning her thyroid condition and persistent fatigue. At the age of 30, two months after she delivered her second child, she began suffering from fatigue, lack of interest and motivation, trouble focusing, hair loss, and difficulty losing the weight she gained during her pregnancy. Since then, her fatigue and exhaustion, often worse in the afternoon, had persisted. “I usually wake up tired and try to get as much done as I can, then I hit a slump and I can’t do anything,” she says. There are days I don’t even feel like getting dressed.”
Searching for the cause of her fatigue, Jessica visited numerous doctors. They all reiterated that she was not suffering from a thyroid disease and that the result of her thyroid tests were in the acceptable range. It took Jessica five years to finally be recognized as suffering from low thyroid when her thyroid test results suddenly showed up slightly abnormal for the first time. Although she felt somewhat better after being prescribed thyroid medication, her fatigue, difficulty focusing, concentrating and irritability had not fully resolved. She also continued experiencing weight gain, lack of interest, anxiety, waves of mental fogginess and tiredness, all affecting her quality of life.
Finally she flew from Denver to see me, and I determined that her low thyroid was caused by an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. Although her persistent fatigue was partially caused by suboptimal thyroid medication treatment, her reactive and agitated immune system was producing inflammation chemicals that were affecting her energy level and mental well-being in other ways. Therefore, in addition to perfecting her thyroid medication and treatment, I focused on improving the health of her immune system in order to reduce the inflammation that haunts most thyroid patients today. Miraculously, after two months of treatment, Jessica’s vitality returned, her exhaustion and fatigue dissipated, and her mental clarity significantly Improved. With a smile on her face, she told me, “I feel like I am a new person now.”
