Answer: To be able to achieve and maintain the most stable thyroid levels in your system with treatment, you should try to take your thyroid medication more or less at the same time of the day, each day. It’s best is to take your thyroid medication first thing in the morning when you wake up on an empty stomach with a big cup of water about 1 hour before breakfast, and avoid drinking coffee until breakfast; coffee can affect the absorption of thyroid hormone that you have taken in the form of a pill. I always prefer that people take their thyroid medication in the morning, particularly if the thyroid treatment includes T3 because T3 will enhance energy and you need more energy during the day when you are active. Research has shown that also taking thyroid hormone late at night before bed time is equally adequate, but the research has focused on T4 medications only. If you elect to take your thyroid medication late at night, make sure you have an early dinner and avoid foods 3 hours before bedtime, which you should do anyway.
