Melatonin supplementation can help your metabolism

Melatonin is a compound formed in the pineal gland that has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The release follows a circadian pattern, meaning there is a higher rate of release at night than during the day. It allows the body to follow the day and night schedule cycle. Melatonin supplements are used widely in the United States primarily as an aid for falling asleep and not waking up during the night.

People with metabolic syndrome tend to have decreased melatonin levels although some studies have suggested that melatonin may alleviate some of the symptoms associated with metabolic syndrome.

Metabolic syndrome, often associated with obesity, can increase the risk of cancer, type II diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. Treatments of metabolic syndrome should always include a healthy diet for weight loss, supplements to combat inflammation, and exercise. In addition, supplemental melatonin may also assist in helping improve blood sugar, blood pressure, and weight loss.

Research has shown that taking melatonin supplements may protect against many of the features of metabolic syndrome including insulin resistance, high blood pressure, and abdominal obesity. If you have metabolic syndrome or a weight gain problem, consider taking a melatonin supplement which will help with your sleep and metabolism.
